Our Story

Kid S.M.A.R.T. was created by a local group of psychologists who observed systemic barriers impacting families’ access to specialized mental healthcare in Nashville, TN. Committed to increasing accessibility for low-income families whose children have more complex medical needs, Kid S.M.A.R.T. creates a way for children to receive comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations and follow-up services at no cost.

Milestones

2010-2017
During training, a local group of psychologists observe systemic barriers impacting families’ access to specialized mental healthcare in Nashville.
2017
After completing formal training, providers continue to observe barriers to care as they start to practice independently. Those in private practices realize they are not reaching many youth with chronic or acute medical needs due to the financial burden of receiving care. There are especially prominent barriers for families on Tenncare who need neuropsychological evaluations.
2020-2022
The pandemic exacerbates the educational impact that untreated medical and neurologic conditions are having on children.
July 2022
Kid S.M.A.R.T. is formally registered as a nonprofit in Tennessee.
Nov 2022
The inaugural board of Kid S.M.A.R.T. has its first meeting.
May 2023
Kid S.M.A.R.T. provides its first scholarship.
June 2023
Kid S.M.A.R.T. obtains 501(c)(3) status.
